LINC Works - Curriculum Materials

Material developed for this project is for learners at CLB (Canadian Language Benchmark) 3 and CLB 5. There are supports in the material to make it suitable for literacy learners. It is designed to be used in LINC (Language Instruction for Newcomers to Canada) classes and therefore includes PBLA (Portfolio Based Language Assessment) tasks - CLB 3 & CLB 5

Essential Skills Assessment Tool

The purpose of the essential skills assessment is to help instructors prepare English language learner (ELL) newcomers for future Canadian workplace success. The assessment provides a snapshot of the students’ workplace essential skill levels in reading, document use, numeracy, writing and listening. There is no pass or fail for this assessment and its objective is to determine ELL newcomers’ essential skills level.

Here to Help: Workplace Communication Skills for Foodplace Service

a resource that will assist newcomers to Canada find and retain entry-level positions in the food services industry. Instructors will be able to use this resource in classrooms to focus on workplace communication, with an emphasis on speaking and listening for busy, time-sensitive environments, like working in a kitchen, cafeteria, or restaurant.

Workplace Online Retention Class

Specialized on-line language course for newcomers who struggle to maintain or advance in their employment/careers. Training was offered through Learning Management System (LMS), where newcomers with Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) 4-5 engaged with short,interactive English online training geared towards employment.

Diversity at Work: Web-based Simulation Activities

This project developed an online resource that can be used by ESL teachers across the continuum of English language programming in Alberta, both for teacher-directed study and to support self-study. The online simulation activities will support adult ESL learners to practice making adaptive decisions in workplace communication. This practice supports these learners to build on their language proficiency, to communicate effectively and appropriately in the Alberta workplace.
