Family Violence Prevention Project
About the Project
The first year of this project funded by the Government of Alberta’s Ministry of Children and Family Development aimed to assess and build family violence prevention capacity among Alberta’s newcomer-serving organizations.
Some examples of family violence might include violence toward a spouse or partner, violence toward children, violence toward elders, gender-based violence, sexual abuse, physical abuse, or emotional abuse.
The grant connected service providers across the province to share wisdom and information about initiatives on the topic of family violence and family violence prevention.
As part of the first year of project activities, a research report titled “Safer Together: Understanding Family Violence Prevention in Alberta’s Settlement Sector” was developed by Meghan Cunningham. The report explores the current landscape of family violence prevention in Alberta’s settlement sector, highlighting service provider experiences, systemic barriers, promising practices, and recommendations to strengthen prevention efforts for newcomer communities.
Project Updates
In March 2026, the project was extended for a second year.
Building on findings and recommendations shared with us by practitioners in the first year, the “Our Love Languages” initiative will examine possible models to provide family violence prevention education in language-learning classrooms. The project will seek to identify where resources could assist language teachers to introduce level-appropriate violence prevention information or to support and refer students encountering family-violence-related crisis.
